A Moment to Treasure

Bookmark and Share
My day began as any other. I woke up, fed and walked the dogs and got ready for work. Lulu would be working with me on this day, so I began getting her ready. I brushed her, cleaned and trimmed her face, and fixed her famous ponytail. We set out together for a very long day of presentations. I had several programs booked at one school and they all went really well. As I was getting ready to leave, the special needs assistant came up to me and remarked how she wished Lulu could come to her classroom. Lulu and I were completely exhausted but I just couldn't say no. I agreed to stop by, meet the students and tell the teacher about my programs.

I entered the classroom and spent some one-on-one time with the children in the room that wanted to meet Lulu. As usual, Lulu sat patiently as they stroked her fur. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the teacher lift a student from a wheelchair and carry him across the room. He sat the boy down next to Lulu. My heart instantly ached. The boy had suffered massive burns to his body... he had lost fingers, his ears, his hair and most of his legs. He could not speak. However, I couldn't help but grin as I watched him pet Lulu, a huge smile spreading upon his face. I showed him how Lulu loves to give kisses. His laughter was infectious. Suddenly, he was staring at me so intently, I knew what he wanted. I asked him if he would like a kiss from Lulu. He beamed and shook his head yes. Lulu kissed him over and over and the laughter continued. The teacher grabbed his camera and took pictures. "You don't understand how important this moment is....he is terrified of everything, even butterflies." He went on to explain how they have been working with the boy to help him overcome his fears. I was amazed. Not only did this boy enjoy petting Lulu, he was allowing her to touch her face to his. I have to admit it was difficult to leave that classroom, I didn't want our visit to end. These are the moments during my job that I treasure. The good news is I will be back. The teacher wants to have me come back to present to his class. I have to admit, I can't wait.

Watch out for Lulu's kisses... they cause contagious laughter!
