My Little Mess Makers

Bookmark and Share

With four dogs and one cat, you can imagine what my beige carpets look like. Especially in the late winter and spring when the backyard becomes a mud pit! I realize I'm fighting a losing battle, but yet I still try. Here are some tips for removing common pet stains from carpet if you have your own floor wars going on:

Grass stains:
Vacuum the stain to remove as much particulate matter as possible. Dip a white towel in cold water and blot the stain, repeating several times with different areas of the towel. You should be able to see the stain begin to transfer onto the towel. After soaking up as much stain as possible, blot with a cleanser listed with a pH of 7 on the label.

Urine:
Soak up as much urine as possible with a dry towel. Press firmly on the stain and repeat several times until no more moisture will soak into the towel. Rinse the area with club soda, then blot several times with a separate towel. Apply a cleaner/neutralizer formulated for pet stains and allow to air dry.

Blood:
Soak the blood stain with cold water. Apply a small amound of hydrogen peroxide and allow to bubble, then repeat until the stain is gone. Blot the area dry with a clean towel. NOTE: Hydrogen peroxide may lighten your carpet! Another alternative is to apply a paste of meat tenderizer/water or corn starch/water, let stand, then vacuum when dry.

Feces:
Remove solids and blot up any moisture with a paper towel. Rinse the area with club soda, then blot with a clean towel. Apply a cleaner/neutralizer formulated for pet stains and allow to air dry.

Vomit:
Remove solids then add a little bit of cold water to the stain. Coat the area with baking soda or salt, let dry. Vacuum, then wet the area again with club soda and blot dry with a clean towel.

Mud:
Do not scrub! This will simply rub in the stain. Allow the stain to completely dry, then scrape away any big chunks of mud. Vacuum, and most should come up if not ground into the carpet. If there is a stain remaining, rinse the area in a solution of 5 parts water and 1 part vinegar. Let soak then blot dry with a clean towel.

Happy cleaning!

These tips are certainly useful! Ha ha, it takes a lot of hard work to get rid of the stains, right? It might take a bit of time and effort yet it gets much better once we see that the carpet is back to being nice and clean! There are many kinds of stains out there, so it's good to compile a list for carpet cleaning and whatnot.
